Lubbock - my home away from home.  August 16, 2001 marks the 10th year I have been away from home!  Most of those years were spent in Lubbock and a year in Levelland when I was living in the dorms at South Plains College.  When I first arrived in Lubbock, I was miserable.  It was my first time away from home, I was very homesick and Lubbock did nothing to lift my spirits.  It was flat and brown and definitely, not home.  Strangely though, I've stayed for so long.

No, Lubbock is not green and moist like Penang or exciting nor pretty (especially if compared to my island home) but I have to admit, it isn't all that bad.  It has its own unique perks.  For example, there's Barnes and Noble here - I just love that place!  I can spend hours (and I do spend hours) there.  Then there are the wineries - Llano Estacado, Caprock and Pheasant Ridge.  We didn't have that back home but then again, grapes do not quite like the tropics.  Another favorite place of mine is Putt Putt Golf.  I don't like to play miniature golf but I like to go there for their other games, namely the video games and, sometimes, their go-karts.  And, of course, South Plains Mall.  There are a lot of really small "eye blink" towns (i.e., if you blink, you'll miss them) around Lubbock.  People from these places usually drive to Lubbock to go to the Mall.  I don't hang out at the Mall per se but I do like to visit some of my favorite stores in the Mall - Nature's Gift (they usually carry the best semi-precious stone carvings), CompUSA (if I'm not careful, I could easily go broke in that place), and Bonnet Pet Store (haven't bought anything from there yet but I do like to go torture myself looking at the pudgy puppies that I can't have - yet.)

And, of course, the other important thing to Lubbock (for me anyway) is family.  My brother and his family is here.  My husband is here and so are most of his family.  Lastly, my cutesy, cuddly cats are here.  My parents visited Lubbock once.  They came here with me when I first came to attend college in 1991.  My Dad passed away years ago but my Mom managed a second visit
